What are the normal sounds that a locker in the rear of a 86 zook should be making?  Also what are the normal sounds that should come from a regeared T-case?

Hell, I ain't never heard a locker make a "normal" sound. Mine make about every other kinda sound, though.
Mine are quiet going straight.
"click, click, click" and sumtimes "click, click, pop" on turns.
And the occasional "Bang!" most of the way through a hard turn on pavement.
I got one that's quieter, and one that's noisier. A lot depends on the wear inside the diff.

I got a GRS-II tcase and it's pretty quiet, just a mild hum. I've heard other people complain about gear whine, tho.

Not too much info, but it's what I got.

Yep.  I have had the same experience with ones I have ran.  The one I had in an 89 sidekick I use to have, would just click, click, click....it never did the loud bang!...it could have been because it was one that came with the replacement side gears (couplers).  Now the one in my samurai is a completely different animal, it sometimes clicks, it sometimes does the loud bang!...it is the type where you reuse the stock sidegears.....don't know if that makes the difference, or if it is because they supposedly redesigned them slightly between the time when I had the sidekick and my now current samurai.

I've got Lock-Rites front and rear, and I love them. Love  The clicks and pops are no big deal.  They're really rather predictable.  When you turn, the inside wheel is the drive.  It wiggles a littles when you change gears, and there's 1/4 to 1/2 a turn play.  I can't imagine wheeling without them, unless I want to imagine getting stuck.

Amen, what he said.

However on a "Trailer Queen", non-daily driver, I prefer to save a little money and Fozzy lock or spool the rear and just use a locker in the front. YMMV.

Out here in nowheresville, I have to travel quite a way to get to good places to wheel.  I can't afford a tow-rig & trailer.  Besides, I'd have to go back the way I came.  On the road, the locker saves a lot of tire wear as compared to a spool, and in the long run will save you money.

i have used lockrights in 2 eb's and 1 yeep.

always worked flawlessly in all of em.

i put in a spool in my 9"  with the lockrite 44   and i decided thats the combo i will use as long as  i could.

currently i am in need of a lockrite for my 85 yota front for 5.29's  but my spool and similar gears are already to go (sorta).

so to sum up all this physcobable /

Lockrite good (sometimes noisy)

I got groans, moans, pops, bangs, whines in my rig no problem.
Honestly though my 4.9:1 is no louder than stock unless in low range.
I wouldn't worry about it unless you drop the fluid and it's metallic.

Yeah, was that many moons ago when you had a v6 in your Zuk?  Were those in stock axles?

BTW a "Miller Locker" is a misnomer pseudonym that refers to a "welded" dif.

I have a front third with a lock rite installed on the way. Have a rear lock rite on the bench, can't find good instructions on how to install it. I know everyone says it's easy, but a visual aid would be great.

I had an early set of Petroworks welded gears and they made a nice hum.  Then I had another case with Trail-tough billet gears and they made alot less noise.  They may have done some re work when they made the billet gears to quiet them down.

Got those install instructions a couple weeks ago Eat Drink many thanks. I was away from home for over 4 weeks this time and have lots to take care of now.  Going to try and get my lockers in sometime in the next few weeks, hopefully before heavy snow and hunting season.

I realy like my lockrites, I have blown 2 front ones, and due to lack of experience on my part I was running it on a 2 pin carrier, now have a rear carrier up front and the new locker is holding fine, the rear locker went to popping under hard downhills last week while letting the engine hold. probably just the pins, but I will put a minispool in there.
I like the pops and clicks, that lets me know it is working

If I have a problem with the rear locker I will probably just put a spool in it's place.  Until then I'll run it.

do yours lurch?

ive never had em in a sami    but when i drove around the trails with phoenix   his lurched all over the place like we were gonna go off the road every time he shifts.

he says its always done it  but ive yet to hear anyone else mention it.

my dana44 in my last eb  had a lockrite with 4.11's and it didnt act like that at all.

the 10 bolt in my ramcharger was welded and it sorta lurched like that  but not death defying.

must be a zuki thing?

my axles are yotas  so i dont know what a locked sami axle is like.

should be similar   shouldnt it?

wvh    just weld it  then   go spool with new stuff?

im a big spool believer  but im using all new gears and axles

if i was just  looking to do it with used stuff    id weld it for sure.

no more chance of axle breakage   i think

btw   a miller locker   and a  lincoln locker  and a scott locker are terms used by seasoned and experienced mechanics and wheelers all over the world and are common nomenclature for the chunk after its been welded.

Already have the lock-rites tho. The front one is already in a third, the rear needs put in. This thing will see some road miles too otherwise I would just spool it. Roads are pretty curvy here and don't really want the rear locked 100%. Have had spools in street cars here and had broken parts and the rear trying to pass the front in the rain.
