Karma works like your feedback score on eBay. If someone goes out of their way to help you, or posts something outstanding, you can [applaud]

them to show your appreciation. If someone is being an asshole, you can [smite]

them to express your negative feelings.
Karma should not be assigned merely because you like someone; it is not a popularity contest. If used appropriately it can be useful, but it has the potential to become a circle-jerk.
Before you can judge someone, you have to take the time to become acquainted. For that reason, and to prevent hit-and-run abuse, a member must have an "Active Member" (12 posts or more) status before they can assign
