Where is the cheapest place locally to get the 8" weld-on pipe caps for making diff guards?

i dont know but im sure interested in what you are talking about !

You get a weld on pipe cap, cut it in half, and weld it to the bottom half of the diff.....keeps from denting the front of the diff and pushing it back into the ring gear/carrier.

There used to be a place on the SW corner of 35th and Noland across the tracks from from the bank that sold stuff like that...  I think they only sell plumbing stuff for the home now, but they might be able to tell you where you can find those large caps.

I bought 2 weld caps a coupla years ago. I think they about $70 each from a piping supply co. Each cap makes 2 diff covers, so that made 'em about $35 ea.

That ain't real cheap, but I got 'em at Reeves-Wiederman Supply in Lenexa.

I have access to a plasma.  I also have a bandsaw, chopsaw, torch.....I have many options.   Cutting/notching is the least of my worries.

huummmm.   i would let one go uncut for $45 .

oh yeah these are the carbon steel ones i think a bit thicker than some of the other ones out there...

I bought mine at a plumbing supply in Topeka.  Ask for an "8 inch, weld-on, pipe cap".  I cut it using a reciprocating saw with a heavy duty blade.  I built a jig because I'm lazy.  To cut drain notches (do this first), I filled a box with sand to hold the cap at an angle.

It took a long time to cut this way.  If I had to do it again, I'd use a cut-off wheel on a grinder.

so will this work for my yotas?   they have a larger diameter housing.

IIRC, I was thinking guys use them on toyota axles too.
The ID of the end of the cap is just under 8"....so you should be able to measure your axle housing to see if it will fit over it.

The eight inch caps work great for the Toyota axle housings also.  I have done a few for Samurai owners, Toyota and also Sidekick/Tracker rears.  I have a jig set up for using a bandsaw, the plasma cutter is how I cut them now.   Don't forget to leave yourself a clean-out or drain hole.

hey all....I was wondering if there are any others who are in need of a cap... so far scott and i have 6, 1 is for us, and i have 4 more on the way... i work in the field where these are very easy to get ahold of... we will more than likely take some to the melt with us too... let us know if you want them cut or un cut...

I did locate a few supply companies that sell the 8" diameter, schedule 40 (1/4" thick) pipe caps very reasonably.
I believe all of these places are located in/around the downtown area.

I'm using these on my rig with Toy axles.  I got them at last years Melt for $25 for the pair.  Work really well when bouncing off the rocks, they just fill up with mud easily.  Here's a couple of pics, sorry there not very good. (and no, my junk doesn't lean that badly, I was parking on a set of tires for the fun of it...lol)
