pros and cons on a sidekick motor, tranny, transfer, swap in a Zuki
«

I just purchased a 95 4door sidekick that was in a rollover. the motor is a 16V and it purrs like a kitten the a/c blows icecubes, and has an auto. There was no damage to the engine compartment at all. A buddy knows I wheel auto and he said to swap out it all. has anyone seen it done? It has the normal and power mode and is an overdrive tranny. He said it have a deeper 1st and the deeper the better I always say. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INPUT.... I NEED IT.

I spoke to Brent @ trail tough and he said kick ass on the motor and tranny but hell no on the transfercase. I will have to cut the tunnel alittle. He has a tail shaft to mate up to a stock sidekick to sammi transfercase. sounds good to me. now how to use the A/C

Keep the A/C and use an external compressor. Have you been outside?

sounds like a perfect candidate for a kicker3
i was going to go that route but i got a 4.3 and adapter .
id love to see a sidekick with a kicker3. thats what id like for a family rig.

very capable and little legal. what is a kicker3? I 'll get some current pics up. its a red 91 with custom bumper, sliders and a 9.5ti winch rolling on 31Ltbs spring over and shackles, hi-steer.I really want to do 35s but I problably will go the yota axles 32in SXs. any other ideas I want the Heep eater kit just because it works. What do ya thing?
How can I keep the A/C on the factory Sammi with no factory A/C.

If you run the auto tranny, you will have to cut (widen) the tranny tunnel too. With a 16V and an auto, IMO, you won't need the kicker 3 (trackick tcase and samurai tcase combo).
Just some info, for those who may not know.....since the auto tranny is a 4 speed, it is computer controlled, you will have to swap the entire 16V wiring harness and engine, in order for it to work correctly....which you are going to do, it sounds like.
If the tranny would be a 2wd one, your samurai intermediate shaft will slip right on the splines of the tranny output shaft....but the shaft length will have to be changed. But since it is 4wd, the output shaft size of the tcase is different and it won't fit. But....the output shaft spline size of the 4wd tranny is the same size as the 2wd tranny output shaft, but I would not recommend running a 4wd tranny without the tcase and just using the intermediate shaft on the 4wd tranny output shaft, because the shaft sticks out a long ways, and would not be supported very well without the tcase attached.
To run AC on a samurai that never had AC, you will need to swap in everything AC related (condenser, evaporator, drier, fan, compressor, lines, wiring, switch)....I know, kind of an obvious answer....but you asked.

My added comments:
If you have 3.73s in your difs, grab the front Ring and pinion out of the Sidekick then find a second matching front R&P. I believe that they are 4.625s
Of course, if you already have aftermarket transfer case gears, disregard this suggestion... and sell the R&P or the R&P and rear axle.
So much to remember...

Oh, it is 2wd then....I guess you won't be swapping a tcase in then (as mentioned in the subject line)
You can use the samurai tranny behind the 16V. They make adapters for it, or you can make your own. Basically the adapters are for the lower engine to tranny bolt holes....since the holes on the 16V are spaced farther out than the holes in the samurai tranny. The upper engine and tranny holes line up.
For the intermediate shaft....it will need to be shortened, but as I mentioned, the slip yoke is the same size/spline as the 2wd tranny output shaft.
The AC swap can be done....I don't know every little detail of it, but what I mentioned earlier is an overview of what needs to be done.
I am in the KC "area".

It will have 5.125 gears. But, as Ack mentioned, you can still swap them over to a samurai. You need 2 front trackick thirds/gearsets....if so desired, you can bolt one trackick front third into the front of your samurai, without any mods at all...even the driveshaft bolt pattern is correct for the trackick pinion flange, since you have a '91..(the downfall of this is that it will be in the trackick stock aluminum housing...so it will be more prone to rock damage), the other front trackick third will either need to have the sidegears swapped out for the samurai ones or you can take the trackick ring and pinion and swap over to the samurai carrier and thirdmember housing (more involved, but it is a stronger setup than using an aluminum third).
I have another 5.125 front third, if you are interested or are in need of one.

Just to clarify the Tracker is 2wd NOT 4 so I don't have any front goodies. and I plan on using my Yota axles. I will run 16v and the Auto. I just the right Transfercase setup.

there is a good thread with pics at Zuwharrie.com on the Samurai engine/auto transmission swap.
To easily find it (and a bunch of other useful info) do a search for
automatic
at Ack's FAQ. The link is in my signature.
