not sure how many forum members on the east coast use A/C but I just had mine recharged with R134.  To me it doesn't seem to get that cold.   In the shade on a warm day with a temp gauge in the vent, I get a maybe low 70's or high 68,66 somewhere in there.

Any ideas on getting it colder or it this it??
thanks

i ran into a similar problem when i switched over in an early bronco.  i was told that the system wasnt properly purged and that lead me back to the shop that told me ( after i paid em )  that it is impossible to get a older system to use the new refrigerant efficently so you get poor results.

sure wish the damn eco-nazis hadnt screwed this up for  us also.

let  me know if you find out anything different

did you check to make sure it was full?
second opinion?

good luck

thanks, I went to a Goodyear service center and they did the inspection and updated the whole system while I was there.   I asked questions and they answer everything I needed to know.   The system is full and the A/C compressor is good and pumping.\

I removed the box container under the dash and looked at what exactly is there.   Its similar to the heater core but with a cooper wire leading to a "valve sperator" or something to that name.   I did tighten the nut to the fitting on that valve as it seem loose and it did tighten up.

Other than that I dont what else to do?    I bought this car from Rods salvage  and he claimed to have had converted to R134, I should have had him just leave it alone with R12.   Anyway the service center guys showed me what a half a!!! job he did!

anyway thanks for the info.

it will never blow as cold as with r-12
try putting some maxi-cool in it they sell it at any parts store or wally world
it helps cool down the gasses and makes it blow cold faster

You will need to pull a lot air condenser to cool temps from r134 because it operates at a much higher pressure than r12. Freeze 12 would have been a better refrigerant than the 134 it works very well in r12 systems requires now changes and is fairly cheap. But it does require a license to purchase.

From what I have read, you will only get about 20* below ambient temp out of the vents.  Meaning on a 90* day, it will only cool to about 70* at the vents.
As far as the "miracles-in-a-can".....the pro's do not recommend them (they say to either run a pure R12 system or properly convert one to 134a).  The miracle refrigerants usually contain a mixture of gasses (one to circulate the old R12 oil and another to actually do the cooling), the problem with them is that the 2 refrigerants are composed of different sized molecules.....so if you have the slightest leak, one gas will leak out before the other...which one?....yep, the one that circulates the compressor oil.....so even though your systems continues to cool fine......your compressor locks up, from a lack of lubrication.
There is a sticky thread over on zuwharrie in the IFS section that has a lot of good info, and links to good info, in it.
Yes you do need a license to buy R12 (which most auto parts stores stock....just have to ask for it and have the proper cert.).  Most anyone can get an R12 license/certification for $15....here is the link to the testing info............... http://www.macsw.org/xcart/product.php?productid=16190&cat=249&page=1

I don't think Freeze 12 requires a license, does it?  Isn't that the stuff I see all over at the auto parts stores, wal-mart, etc.?
