Nuthin organized, just a show up and join the group kinda thing. I expect about 15 LJ's to show.

And you are all invited! Come pit yer Samurai's against these little pint sized tigers!

We're gonna be at Russ Hogan's campground.

Lemme know if'n ya wanna come and I'll post more details as I get 'em.

But we'll kick butt, no matter who shows up.

Hmmm, pretty pathetic response so far...  I think you may have scared everyone off Smuz...

Maybe if you told them that Mouser wasn't making the trip, they'd be less scared? Wink

Maybe I'll fly out there and rent a Heep...  you know, give these boys a little confidence... LOL

I'll prolly be pulling out about 12-1 on Sunday.

Last count I got is gonna be about 8 LJ's actually showing. All but 2 will be stockers, I think.

Any Sammi's or other zukes from here showing up say so here so's we got an idea how many's coming.

And remember, this ain't organized, we're just gathering for the fun of it.

We had a pretty good turn out. 7 LJ's , 2 Sammi's, and one Sidekick.

The carnage was light:
Phoenix: snapped the hub bolts on the left side of his Sammi but continued on with 3-wheel drive.
Tweeder: broke the bolts holding the jugs to the crankcase on his LJ. Put him out of action.
Russ: Had fuel problems that turned out to be dirt in the fuel system.
mlovetripp: Broke a u-joint and cracked a transfer case. Last seen waiting for the JB-weld to set so he could have at 'er again.
Smuz: Sleepy the LJ came home without 4WD. Not sure what broke: either the locker, the t-case or the ring gear. Time will tell.

We think the hub bolts broke on friday evening when Phoenix followed Shane and I up Pine Loop Gulch. It was a gnarley climb with a lot of rock ledges, off-camber and loose climbs. He made the last part of the climb in loose rocks with 3-wheel drive. Him and his Sammi did very well on the trails and in the rocks.

Tweeder's motor quit on a steep climb and before he could either push in on the clutch or give the brake pedal the 2 pumps that it takes on an LJ, the motor turned over and actually fired in reverse rotation. We think this is when it over pressurized the crankcase and stripped/broke the jug bolts.

Oh.... Phoenix and one other LJ aren't in the pic because the LJ had already left for home very early in the AM and Phoenix hadn't got there yet.

Hasn't Phoenix broke hub bolts before?  Any idea on why they keep breaking?.....seems like an unusual thing to continually break (or break at all, for that matter).

Two pumps to get the brakes to work......sounds like fun. Nail Bite

Yes he has, both times on the driver's side. I suggested that he locktite and torque them properly this time. I think they're coming loose and then shearing.

Yup. LJ's have 4 wheel drum brakes with a tiny master cylinder. If they're not adjusted on the "gnat's ass" then ya gotta pump twice to get good brakes. Part of the fun and the reason I went to 4 wheel disk on Sleepy.

Yeah, they broke last month at Disney.  I replaced the hub and bolts off of a parts car.  You may recall that those bolts use cone washers.  They need to be torqued a couple of times, while they seat.  While I was on the trail waiting for the guys to diagnose Russ' fuel problems, I went to re-torque the bolts and found that they were gone!  Crying  I just continued in 3 wheel drive being careful where I put that wheel.  Next time I'll re-torque them BEFORE I try anything knarley!

You confused TweedEr with Russ. Russ's LJ ran fine at home and for about 30 minutes on the trail. Then (we presume) the bouncing on the riverbed broke all kindsa crap loose that plugged up the filter and the little fuel pump. Once we bypassed the filter and used an electric fuel pump to squirt alla the mud out, it ran fine the rest of the time. All part of the process of resurrecting a 35 year old vehicle that's sat in a barn for the last 15 years.

Yes, I do recall they use cone washers.  Any time I have the hub off, I clean the bolts and cone washers up good (with a wire wheel), then I put anti-seize on the cone washers and lock-tight on the threads, and torque them once.....I haven't had any problems with them loosening up, by doing it that way.

Actually, my LJ made it up the ledges and past the cave to the squeeze. There's where I chickened out. That squeeze looked like a "can opener" just looking for an LJ body to rip. And I also didn't think my 76" wheelbase was gonna make it up the shoulder-high ledge that came next. I don't think we got any pics of me climbing the ledges, but we got some swell shots of my LJ backed completely into the cave and some more of me coming down.

Shane's Sidekick popped the bead on the left front at the squeeze, so he didn't make it either.

mlovetripp's Sammi went thru Little Blue like grass thru a goose and made it look easy.

if you use a different photo sharing site  goto the kczuks section   i probably already reserved one but didnt ever use it as i like photobucket the best for pics.   still working on the video stuff   you tube is kinda a pia  i think  but im still learning.
back to the topic

if youd upload your pics to the kczuks photobucket site   just pm me for password as id like to know who has it for when i change it.

im sarting a web design course at a local junior college next month so i can quit guessing this stuff.

who knows  i might even make a buck or two just with the requests for help ive already had.

if you dont try to rape people on web design its amazing the word of mouth factor.

PLEASE DONT MOVE PICS AROUND photobucket of pics SITE OR REMOVE FROM those SITEs AS IT DESTROYS THE LINKS OTHERS HAVE USED.

Just for the record, no crud ever reached the filter. It was just a bunch of rust flakes that stuck in the fuel line. And then cleared. And then plugged. And there still wasn't any crud in the fuel filter or the pump, or the carb. Lucky for me, there was an electric pump to be had.  It did a good job of pulling all the flakes out and spitting them out. I used the electric for a couple hours, no problems. Back at camp, I put the system back to stock and ran the rest of the afternoon. Still no crud in the filter. I'll be the first to admit that I don't have any terrain that rough around here....so no chance to pull the crud off the bottom of the tank.
