LJ vs. Samurai challange
«
on:
May 10, 2007, 20:58:07 pm »
OK, I'm pissed.
Really pissed.
Really, really pissed.
You Samurai people look down on LJ's. Kinda like the Heep assholes look down on Samurai owners.
Wait a minit. Mebbe not quite THAT bad. But pretty bad.
Hey, we are Suzuki people too.
I got 3 LJ's. (well, I got a Sammi and an X90 too, but that ain't for this topic.)
My son has an LJ. A coupla friends have LJ's.
Anybody wanna see a Sammi go up against an LJ?
??
I mean like for like. I got a bone stock LJ10 with a 24hp 2 cylinder open diff that I'll put up against a bone stock Sammi.
I got a mostly stock LJ20 TT with welded rear and locked front I'll put up against a comperable Sammi.
I got a built LJ10 with a "big block" 3 cylinder Geo Metro engine, big tires, locked both ends, etc........
My son has an LJ80 with a 1.0 engine, welded rear, open front.
A friend in Arkansas has a LJ20 beater...welded rear.
Whattay'all think? Shall we have a shoot out?
??

I think the only place an LJ suffers is on the freeway.

Hey Smuz,
I know how you feel.. I kinda get looked down on a lot for wheeling an IFS trooper...
Wilson's got guts and really impressed me. I'd take up the "challenge" just to get out wheeling with you and ur son again, that was a blast!!

I had an awesome tail wind going North on our way home from KSRocks 04/22.
I was having trouble staying under 70.
Did you notice it?

Wilson once held 75+ mph all the way across Kansas on I-70.
He was sitting on the trailer going "Wheeeeeeeee!!!!!" while the Purple Pig was pickin 'em up and layin 'em down.

Maybe you've just got an inferiority complex... kind of like some short people.
Maybe Samurai people are just envious because you're cuter than they are.
Maybe you're just elitists (my shit is rarer than your shit).
All I know is that smaller and lighter is good, and LJ's have more less than I do.

I haven't done that since the National Speed Limit was 55 mph. But imagine 430 miles at 6000+ rpm! But wait! There's more!
I also drove my L51 from Marquette, MI to Asheville, NC; Virginia Beach, VA; Washington, DC and back to Marquette one summer. But I stayed off the freeway when I could... about 2700 miles. The L51 could do 62 mph on the flat, no wind, no passengers and with a LJ20 Diff.
But you guys only care about off road.
Way up North, when I last lived there, I used to take my LJ out on the Snowmobile trails. Keep in mind this is a compacted crust on top of 4 feet of snow. I did slide off once, and thought I was gonna be buried. Good thing I had a friend along, we just dragged the front end back up. And off we went!

Also, here is a quote from Stevec, owner of LJ10.com and one of the founding members and officers of Wazuks in Seattle..................
Umm, that's not much of a challenge... Anyone who has seen an LJ in action knows that perfectly well, and the specs speak for themselves. I've had my Samurai since it was brand new back in 1986, and wheeled it stock for a few years, then gradually modified it to where it is today, so I've been in both, and can speak for both. As much as I love my Samurai, the LJ10 is just plain better in stock form.
The only advantage the Samurai has is hp, but not by much. A Samurai has about twice the horsepower as an LJ10, but also weighs nearly twice as much. Ok not quite (~1300# vs. 2200#), but close enough.
But look at everything else:
Stock granny low on a Samurai is about 31:1, stock low range on an LJ10 is 68:1. Even with 4:1 gears, the Samurai is geared higher (about 57:1) than a stock LJ! No contest; and this more than negates the lack of horsepower.
Ground clearance: Stock LJ10 tires (6.00x16) are about 28" in diameter, whereas Samurai tires (P205/70R15) are around 25", so the static radius on an LJ10 is at least 1" more than that on a Samurai. Add to that the smaller diff on the LJ, and you end up with about 2" of extra ground clearance on the LJ.
If we're talking bone stock, the stock LJ tires (NDT military tread) are much better suited for offroad use than the stock Samurai tires.
The LJ is narrower than the Samurai, so it'll fit through places easier than a Samurai will. The LJ also has a much smaller turning radius than the Samurai.
Consumer Reports never said anything bad about the LJ10! Razz
The same things that make a Samurai better than a Heep offroad (and for that matter, make the old Heeps better than the new ones), also makes a stock LJ better than a stock Samurai. If you look at the numbers, and based on my considerable experience wheeing both rigs, wheeling a bone stock LJ10 is comparable to wheeling a Samurai with open diffs, a mild (~3") lift, 30" tires (to get the ground clearance of the LJ), and a 4:1 t-case. I'd still choose the LJ though, because it'll still fit into more places, and has the tighter turning radius (no 3-point turns!)
Smuz, feel free to use this in your argument over there on the KCZuks board.
So THERE!
