is it better to have many little wires or a few really thick wires .  ? thanks While it is true that the bigger the overall gauge of wire, the better......for the individal strands of wire, within the insulation, the finer strands are better.

current travels on the outside of the wire so id say many little wires??? That is correct. By using stranded wire instead of solid wire, you create more surface area for the electrons to migrate on thus lowering the overall resistance of the wiring - or so they told me in electronics class...
