Replacing Manual with an auto?

Okay guys I picked up a 3 speed auto from an 88 sidekick this weekend at the pick and pull. It will be a winter project but I am wondering if there is anything I need to know about swapping this into my 96 16v tracker. Thanks, Jake

Did you get the flexplate and TC too? And the shifter?
What are you doing with the pedal assembly....just going to leave the "extra" pedal? The pedal assembly from the 89 will not swap into the 96.
I know the wiring harness for the automatic is a little different than the manual harness....but I don't think you HAVE to swap wiring harnesses (since a 3 speed auto is not computer controlled).
It may run a little "funny" like when coming to a stop, or sitting at a light, etc....since the computer will be controlling the engine, thinking it has a manual tranny behind it. But it shouldn't be a big enough problem to cause any real driveability issues.
The 3 speed auto shifting is controlled by vacuum...so there is a vacuum line that runs from the engine to the tranny. IIRC, the vacuum line runs from the intake manifold...so I'm not sure if the manifold needs to be switched or if the 5 speed intake has some vacuum ports on it that are plugged that can be used. Ooo...I just thought, you are putting it behind a 16V (in which the 3 speed auto is kinda rare....you probably won't have "plugged" vacuum ports you can use).
I'll have to check into it a little closer and get back with some more definite info. Sorry.
Oh, and the sidekick you got it from is an 89 (didn't make them in 88). Build date could be 88, but the first "model year" was 89.
EDIT:
Ok, after doing some checking/looking....the intake manifolds are different between a 8V with a manual behind it and an 8V with an auto behind it (I know, it doesn't help you, since you are running a 16V). But the 8V/auto manifold has a vacuum port on the backside of it, with some type of connector/adapter thing screwed into it (I don't know if it is just an adapter, or a check valve, or what). The 8V/manual manifold uses this connector and vacuum port for a vacuum source for the MAP sensor. The 8V/auto manifold has an extra vacuum source on the passenger side of the intake, below the throttle body for the vacuum source for the MAP sensor.
Looking at a 16V engine....the only one I had to look at was one with a manual behind it (and everything is still in the vehicle, so it is hard to see anything), but I could not see if there was a vacuum port on it that can be used specifically for a 3 speed auto tranny. If not, you may be able to "tap" into another vacuum line for the vacuum source.

Thanks for the info. I was unable to get the tc and the Flexplate due to the motor being locked up. So I will have to buy that later. I will fab a shifter and I did see the port that the 8v had on the intake. Figure I'll pull it off and see what is inside of it. ALot of time nothing!
Let mw know what you are getting for t-cases cause I still need 2 more. Thanks! Jake

Couldn't you get to the flexplate bolts once you took the tranny out...or am I overlooking something?
Are you needing tracker tcases?
